A guide to help you in selecting the best skip bin
Hiring a skip bin can be a pretty hassle-free process if you consider a few things before you place an order for a bin and have it delivered.
Here are a few things to think about before you start throwing rubbish in your skip bin.
What rubbish are you disposing of?
First of all, ask yourself “what do type of rubbish do I need in the skip bin? Unlike a lot of waste management, companies Skip Bins Gold Coast can provide specific bins to suit your requirements including domestic skip bins, commercial skip bins, and construction skip bins. If you are unsure of what type of skip bin you need, for example, if your business is moving offices and needs to declutter and throw out old office furniture, our helpful staff will find a bin to suit.
Generally, general waste, construction site material, and broken furniture can all go in a skip bin, but it’s best to call Skip Bins Gold Coast first. Calling us can also save money as we can advise on the correct skip bin sizes to suit your job.
You can’t put everything in a skip bin
Local council bylaws and occupational safety laws prohibit the disposal of some items in skip bins. Some excluded items include:
- Hazardous chemicals and materials
- Paint (wet and dry)
- Asbestos
- Oil
- LPG and other types of gas bottles
- Tyres
- All battery types
- Food waste
- Glues and other liquid items

Additional safety and legal considerations
Correct placement of your skip bin is very important and many people don’t give this due consideration before the scheduled skip bin is delivered. You will also need to make sure that there is enough room for the driver to safely unload the skip bin onto your property and that the position that you have allocated for the skip bin is flat and away from power lines and overhead trees. As a general rule, the driver prefers a clearance of no less than half a metre around the sides of the bin, and a direct line of sight for reversing purposes is also ideal.
If the skip bin is to be placed on a property that you don’t own (like council land, nature strips, or vacant blocks) then it is extremely important that all appropriate permissions from the landowner be obtained, as you don’t want to be made to move the bin to an alternative location (most skip bin companies charge an additional fee for relocating a bin once delivered).
When loading your rubbish into the bin, it is best to distribute the weight evenly. The best practice is to load all heavy items across the floor of the bin and place smaller and lighter waste at the top. It is important to remember that once your rubbish reaches the top rim of the skip bin, then your bin is full. Overloading the bin will prevent drivers from collecting it as it is illegal for skip bins to be transported when overfull. This is because the waste above the rim can impact driver safety and is dangerous during bin transporting, as waste could fall out and cause a threat to other road users. Therefore, nearly all skip bin companies will charge you an additional fee when dealing with an overfull bin, including the cost of supplying an additional bin and loading the excess content into it.
